An eSIM is a digital SIM that's built into most modern smartphones, allowing you to connect to a mobile network without needing to insert a physical SIM card. In Singapore, most telcos support eSIM connectivity for their SIM-only plans, making switching mobile providers easier than ever, and most mobile phones, cellular-connected laptops, tablets and smartwatches support eSIM, which means no more physical cards are necessary.

However, eSIM is still relatively new, and it can be confusing to those who are used to SIM cards. In this guide, we break down everything you need to know about eSIM, including how to use it in Singapore and abroad.

What is eSIM? What's the difference between eSIM vs SIM card?

eSIM stands for embedded SIM (Subscriber Identity Module). Like a regular SIM card, an eSIM allows you to connect to your mobile provider’s network and your plan. The only difference is that it’s built into your phone (or other device) and is not tied to any one provider, meaning you can switch at any time without needing to get a new physical SIM.

Most phones also allow you to have multiple eSIMs at once, meaning you could have a work number and a personal number on the same device. It also makes travelling overseas a breeze, as you can download and install eSIMs for other countries in a matter of seconds.

On the downside, using eSIM exclusively means switching phones can be a little trickier, as it’s not as simple as removing a SIM card from one device and inserting it into another. Sometimes you may need to use your telco's app to transfer your eSIM to a new device, while some devices will automatically transfer it when you sync your old phone's data to the new one.

What devices support eSIM?

All flagship (and some budget) smartphones and other cellular devices released in the last few years support eSIM. Some cheaper devices may still require a physical SIM, but eSIM has been available on iPhone since 2018, Google Pixel since 2019, Samsung Galaxy devices since 2020, and OPPO phones since 2021. Some devices even allow you to have multiple eSIMs, ideal for those who frequently travel internationally.

How do you activate an eSIM?

Purchasing and activating an eSIM is simple, fast, and can be done just about anywhere at any time. Most of the providers who offer eSIM will give you the option of an eSIM or a physical SIM at checkout, but some telcos also allow you to buy an eSIM through their mobile app. Your provider will do all the hard work for you, but you might be given a set of instructions to set your eSIM up properly.

Can I use eSIM and a physical SIM together?

Yes! The beauty of eSIM is that, in most cases, you can have multiple, even alongside whatever physical SIM card(s) you may have.

Does eSIM cost extra?

No, an eSIM doesn’t cost any more than a regular SIM card. In fact, in most cases it's cheaper, as your telco doesn't have to charge you for postage of a physical SIM.

Does eSIM offer the same network coverage as a physical SIM?

Yes. Functionally, eSIM and physical SIM cards are identical, so your coverage will be the same regardless of which type you choose.

Can I convert my physical SIM to an eSIM and vice versa?

It depends on your provider, but in most cases, yes. This can be helpful if you’re switching to a device that does (or doesn’t) offer eSIM capabilities.

How do I move my eSIM from one phone to another?

Perhaps the only major downside of eSIM is that switching to a new device isn’t as simple as inserting your old SIM into the new phone. To do so, you’ll need to contact your provider. They’ll likely give you a new QR code to scan, which will install the eSIM onto the new phone. Some telcos may make it easier by allowing you to self-manage your eSIM from their app.
